Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of sixteen million for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for ranking in the top ten.
  • An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his permission and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with recording often, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the USA, he slugged a tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The lefty slugger is set to be officially presented at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
