‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to scoring with the Basque club
The initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in English soil, an young representing Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens six weeks after that, indeed, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, too. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the short journey to Loiu airport and another flight to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It has become a difficult season for Athletic, due in part to the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in European competition. However, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary accompanied by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are unique and making their first appearance in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
He considered it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in that summer, he experienced a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, you have everything, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
You also have to play. The striker moved upset in 2020, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, at times, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
