Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were arrested at the location and a third person who fled after the explosion was apprehended soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the blast had occurred on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told local news, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
