Peak Pizza? Domino's CEO Departs Following Pivot Into Fried Chicken.

A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have hit pizza saturation while broadening the company into poultry items has been removed after tensions with its governing body.

Executive Change

Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's looks for a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who served at the company for more than two decades, had attempted to redirect the UK's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, stating recently there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the most rapidly expanding menu item in the international market.

Board Disagreements

Sources suggest that there was tension between the CEO and the board over his strategy and management style, although Domino's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.

Recent Brand Introduction

In the autumn, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief referred to as a “significant new phase” for the group – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.

While the business is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as scheduled, it views chicken products as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.

Board Comment

Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “Directors think that there are a series of prospects to drive further growth and value creation in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on finding the right chief executive to direct the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”

Industry Challenges

Earlier this month, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said orders dipped by one and a half percent in the Q3. In the summer, it warned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in half-year profits.

Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain announced the shutting of multiple locations a month ago, after the company behind its British operations faced financial collapse.

Health Efforts

Responding to market shifts towards balanced diets, the company has launched lower-calorie options, such as its thin-crust range of bakes below 400 kcal as well as vegan and wheat-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171, while a small has 909 kcal.

Interim Management

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the gaming group a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to take on the CEO position on a full-time basis.

She commented: “Our team has a number of current development and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on carrying out at a rapid rate.”

Frampton noted these involved additional efforts on the organization's procurement system and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.

Domino's is also lacking a long-term CFO until the spring, when Andrea joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow is interim finance chief.
