Saved from Ukraine Lioness Receives Critical Dental Operation

An adolescent lioness saved from war-torn the war zone has received critical oral operation to remove a severely infected fang resulting from an infection.
The lioness was brought to a wildlife sanctuary in Kent, England on March 14 following a campaign by director Cam Whitnall, who raised £500,000 to support her and several other lions from Ukraine.

The procedure was carried out on Friday by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"Upon inspecting the lioness's oral cavity, I could see right away the damaged fang was highly inflamed," stated the dentist.
He thought the dental issue was due to a injury experienced over twelve months back, leading to germs producing harmful substances within the fang.
"The approach I follow is non-human oral health issues need to be treated in the most predictable, the least invasive and most secure manner," he said.
Mr Kertesz explained that as Lira no longer required to catch prey, extraction was the most "sensible and ethical solution."
The Animal Rescue Facility
The rescue center said the extracted tooth was 3.14 inches in length, with the dentist having to remove a pocket of pus from under the fang and close the significant opening with seven dissolving sutures.
He also performed a dental procedure on the corresponding top fang, which was discovered to have a similar issue.
Briony Smith, manager at The Big Cat Sanctuary, declared the procedure was a "total triumph."
She noted the staff had observed "a small lump on Lira's jawline" but it had been difficult to assess "the extent of the problem."
"The lioness will be somewhat sore to initially, but now that the toxins are removed from her system, she will begin improving over the coming days," added the curator.
The successful surgery marks a major milestone in the lioness's healing process after her arrival from the conflict area.
