Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team
England have chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether the venue conditions favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.
In July, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
