Walmart Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

In a significant move, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during one shopping trip. This policy was activated as of early November, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced significant criticism for allowing the bulk transaction to proceed.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Additionally, since the limit is based on each visit, theoretically an eager reseller could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities throughout the day.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Certain buyers aim to resell sealed items at a markup, whereas some search for rare cards that can command sky-high values. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.

Upcoming Releases

The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the ongoing demand and likely scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for true fans and casual players as well.
